The use of private email addresses for Council business is frowned upon and Councils are encouraged to ensure that members have a specific email address for Council business.
It is not mandatory for Councils to have a .gov.uk email address but using a gov.uk domain for Council business, email, and website is a sign of good practice, trust and professionalism.
Councils with a gov.uk domain benefit from:
- Robust security measures
- Emails that are immediately recognisable as legitimate and trustworthy by the recipient
- Separation of personal and professional communications – recipients will always understand the capacity in which you are emailing
- Administrative control over email accounts for easy management of change
During 2024 there has been a national push encouraging parish and town councils to move to a .gov.uk domain and use official .gov.uk email addresses
A grant became available from the Central Digital and Data Office to help pay for this
Emails sent to the former addresses will automatically be delivered to the new addresses but if you do keep any of the addresses in your contacts list, you may wish to amend them.
